Tasting Notes

Slightly shyer on the nose compared with Lyndoch at first, then the bouquet opens with blackcurrant in spadefuls, accompanied by nuanced tobacco and leather notes, and even a hint of black liquorice. The deep ruby, almost purple colour suggests concentration, yet there is season derived freshness perfectly in sync with the house style, which leans toward firmer inner structure and complexity rather than sheer body. Nothing seems to stick out here; pure, unmasked varietal expression, laden with complexity and grainy tannins. A result of vineyard age, iron rich soil, and longer than average time on skins. Old vine core, contemporary swagger. Double decanting at least two hours before enjoying is highly recommended.

About

Planted in 1926 near the Lutheran settlement of Light Pass, this vineyard rests on a small patch of medium fertile, distinctly red loamy clay over limestone, with ironstone scattered across the topsoil. There are many reasons why this has been and still is one of the most desired soil types for growing red grape varieties that produce structured, full bodied wines. It seems every gnarly vine could tell a different story. Some appear impervious to hardship, growing strong, healthy trunks from the ground up, while others can barely stand on fragile, thin, and in some cases Eutypa affected stems. They are magnificent nonetheless, persevering through time and all manner of unfavourable environmental events so that we can continue to enjoy the precious fruit they manage to bear each year.

Handpicked on 25th April. After being fully destemmed, the grapes underwent a brief cold soak before spontaneous fermentation, with punch downs carried out only during the 14 days of maceration. After pressing off, the young wine was transferred to seasoned French oak barrels (around 5% new), where it remained on fine lees for 30 months. Only small amount of sulphur dioxide was added occasionally during this period. After being racked out of barrel, the wine spent a few months in stainless steel before bottling in February 2026.

871 bottles produced, 6 magnums.

No fining or filtration. Minimal sulphur dioxide added.
Alcohol Vol. (%): 14.5%
